The Obama-Reid-Pelosi Agenda Lives

Posted by Tom Skypek in 2010 Elections, Conservatism, Current Events

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has announced that she will seek the position of House Minority Leader in the next session of Congress.  And, of course, Harry Reid will return as the Senate Majority Leader (much to the chagrin of Dick Durbin and Chuck Schumer).  The election results were a repudiation of big government liberalism–cap and trade, Obamacare, the so-called stimulus, and TARP.

Clearly, though, that’s not how the Democratic Party or the White House interprets the election results.  Thinking about 2012, this seems like a good thing for conservatives and Republicans.  Not only will Obama not be able to run against the “do-nothing”  Republican Congress (since we only control one chamber),…

National Debt Increases $5 Trillion After Pelosi Declared, “No New Deficit Spending”

Posted by Tom Skypek in American Politics

The Obama administration and the Democratic-controlled Congress say they are serious about reducing the national debt.  The subject of our current book giveaway, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, even vowed in 2007 that there would be “no new deficit spending,” according to a recent article by CNSNews.com.  It’s true what the say: actions speak louder than words.  Since her proclamation, the national debt has increased by $5 trillion.  You don’t need to have a PhD in Economics to understand that nothing good can come from a nation whose debt is $13 trillion.  When that bubble pops, it will have cascading effects for all Americans.

Chances are if you’re a conservative–or judging by this latest Gallup Poll, an Independent voter–you do not have a favorable impression of Nancy Pelosi.  In fact, if you’re a conservative, then the mere mention of her name likely conjures up a number of images and thoughts that offend your limited government sensibilities:  Obamacare, San Francisco liberalism (turns out she’s from Baltimore!), big government, etc.  Rochelle Schweizer’s book, She’s the Boss:  The Disturbing Truth About Nancy Pelosi, provides an interesting and…

Fimian for Congress

I enthusiastically endorse Keith Fimian for Virginia’s 11th district congressional seat.  Despite countless efforts by his opponent–Rep. Gerry Connolly, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and other third-party organizations (MoveOn.org)–to obfuscate the debate and make the election about anything and everything but public policy, Keith Fimian has consistently talked about the important policy issues facing this country and the people of Virginia’s 11th congressional district.  Fimian has run a positive campaign–focusing on the issues and Connolly’s voting record over the last two years on Capitol Hill and his record of mismanagement during his time as chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

Connolly’s views on government and public policy are simply inconsistent with the voters of the 11th district. Connolly voted for the stimulus package, cap…

I Support Ken Cuccinelli’s Fight Against Socialized Medicine

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, President Obama signed into law a health care bill of historic proportions.  That bill includes an individual mandate on Americans that declares that they must buy health insurance or face penalties.  This overreaches the authority of Congress under the Commerce Clause and is therefore unconstitutional.  Yesterday, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli filed a suit in federal district court in Richmond challenging the constitutionality of this legislation.  It is heartening that there are public servants who still believe in, and are willing to defend, the United States Constitution.

The United States Senators and Representatives who passed this legislation have betrayed their oath of office.  Since they’ve long forgotten, here it is:

I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution…

Bob Kerrey: Candidates’ Position on Surge Irrelevant

According to former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey, the candidates’ position on last year’s troop surge is irrelevant.  Today, he wrote in the Denver Post, “Arguing about who was right or wrong in 2003 or even who was right or wrong about the surge has little bearing on the question of what do we do today, moving forward.”  Sen. Kerrey couldn’t be more wrong.  Sen. McCain advocated the troop increase last year at a time when public support for the Iraq War had reached its lowest levels and politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid were waving the proverbial white flag of defeat.

The fact is that the troop surge increased security throughout Iraq, setting the conditions for political progress.  Sen. McCain…
