Huckabee Declines to Take Shot At Daniels

Via Tim Alberta at the National Journal:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) doesn’t like the idea of Republicans calling a “truce” on social issues to focus on fixing the economy — but that doesn’t mean he’s eager to take on the man pushing that message, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R).

“I’m a fan of Mitch Daniels,” Huckabee said on a conference call with reporters Monday, adding that Daniels has “an extraordinary skill set not only to be governor but to be president.”

Huckabee was speaking with reporters one day before the release of his book, “A Simple Government,” in which he writes: “I’ve been criticized many times for talking so much about ‘social issues’ when the real issue now, according to…

In Defense of Mitch Daniels

God Bless them both but Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin are dead wrong on Governor Mitch Daniels.  I’ve listened to Rush for almost a decade and Levin for several years now, and I enjoy them both but their commentary on the Indiana governor is counterproductive for conservatives and is based more on a knee-jerk reflex than an evidentiary claims.  What is more, they’ve lost sight of the critical question for conservatives as we approach the 2012 presidential election:  who is the most conservative candidate with the most viable path to 270?

For whatever reason, the talk radio giants have elected to mischaracterize Mitch Daniels’s record when it comes to the “social issues,” seizing on Daniels’s “truce” comment from last year.  Sound bites aside, as Indiana blogger Josh Gillespie…

Why Sarah Palin Can’t Win the Presidency

I’m going to catch some slack from my conservative brethren for writing this, but I don’t believe that Sarah Palin can win the 270 electoral votes required to win the presidency.  If you’re trying to analyze objectively a candidate’s presidential prospects, you need to think in terms of electoral votes.  More specifically, ask yourself, “Which states does the candidate need to win in order to get to the magic number of 270?”  But Sarah Palin isn’t the only potential candidate who would have trouble getting to 270.  Like Palin, conservative favorites Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul don’t seem to have a viable path to 270, either.  To beat Obama we will need to win a number of independent voters and both Palin and Gingrich…

Why I Like Mitch Daniels

Purity in martyrdom is for suicide bombers.  King Pyrrhus is remembered, but his nation disappeared.  Winston Churchill set aside his lifetime loathing of Communism in order to fight World War II.  Challenged as a hypocrite, he said that when the safety of Britain was at stake, his “conscience became a good girl.”  We are at such a moment.  I for one have no interest in standing in the wreckage of our Republic saying “I told you so” or “You should’ve done it my way.”

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, speaking at the 2011 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)

I like Mitch Daniels for a variety of reasons including his laser beam focus on the national debt and  his suggestion that we’re…

U.S. National Debt is new “Red Menace,” says Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels

From the WaPo’s Aaron Blake:

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday that the nation’s growing debt amounts to a new “Red Menace”, equating the country’s fiscal situation to its Cold War fight with Russia.

“It is the new Red Menace, this time consisting of ink,” Daniels said at his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference. “We can debate its origins endlessly and search for villains on ideological grounds, but the reality is pure arithmetic.

The Soviet threat during the second half of the 20th Century was the main theme of Daniels’ speech, which lasted just over a half-hour and was chock full of dense rhetoric and almost devoid of applause lines.

Daniels made no mention of his own political plans in his…

2012 Republican Primary Poll Analysis: Which Republican are you most likely to support in 2012?

It might be hard to imagine but after Tuesday’s midterm elections, the 2012 presidential election will start to gear up.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if several candidates announce the formation of exploratory committees as early as December of this year, though most will try to wait until at least January.  Remember:  disgraced Democratic Senator John Edwards announced his plans to seek the nomination in December 2006.  Other major candidates from both parties announced plans to run in January 2007.

We had a total of 284 respondents answer the following question–Which Republican are you most likely to support in 2012?  There were seventeen potential candidates on the ballot–some obvious Republican choices and some less obvious choices.  Sarah Palin won by…

Mitch Daniels: The Ideas Guy

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels is definitely an ideas guy.  He’s a big thinker who really seems to understand that this country is in dire financial straits.  We’re living beyond our means and trimming around the edges of the federal budget simply won’t suffice.  We need entitlement reform.  Michael Barone recently wrote an interesting piece on Daniels in NRO:

“This is a survival-level issue for the country. We won’t be a leader without major change in the federal fiscal picture. We’re going to have to do fundamental things you say are impossible.”

He believes that “Democrats are better positioned to do this, but they’re not going to lead. This will probably be a Republican responsibility.” To do what exactly?

To propose “fundamental changes in…

Daniel Larison on Mitch Daniels and Foreign Policy

Posted by Tom Skypek in American Foreign Policy

Interesting post on Mitch Daniels and foreign policy from Daniel Larson.  We definitely need a candidate who will rethink our foreign policy commitments and focus on reducing the national debt and preserving our liberty and prosperity at home.  We engage in foreign affairs not to remake the world in our image but to protect our liberty here in the states.

More on Mitch Daniels

Interesting article from Politico about Governor Mitch Daniels and his presidential candidate-like activities.  Governor Daniels has been meeting with some heavy hitters in the Republican Party.  In terms of foreign policy, Ian Brzezinski, who served as a deputy assistant secretary of defense in George W. Bush administration, went to visit Daniels in Indiana.  In the coming months, it will be interesting to see who Governor Daniels looks to for foreign policy advice.  During a Q&A session with some conservative journalists, the governor told Jennifer Rubin of Commentary that we must reassess some of our foreign commitments–he told Rubin that we need to “ask questions about the extent of our [presumably military] commitments.  If we go broke, no one will follow a…

The Conservative Mitch Daniels

I’ve been watching Mitch Daniels’s career as governor of Indiana with great interest for the last few years.  I was impressed by his election in 2004 and then his 18-point margin of victory in 2008, a very tough year to have an “R” next to your name.  Daniels is a true fiscal conservative and effective decision-maker.  Andrew Ferguson recently wrote a terrific profile of Daniels in the latest issues of The Weekly Standard.  His achievements in Indiana have been impressive:

When Daniels took office, in 2004, the state faced a $200 million deficit and hadn’t balanced its budget in seven years. Four years later, all outstanding debts had been paid off; after…
