The Best of Maureen Dowd
It amazes me that Charles Krauthammer and Maureen Dowd are in the same profession–they’re both pundits who write for major national newspapers but the the similarities really end there. This point struck me today as I was reading Dowd’s latest piece in the New York Times, “Making Ignorance Chic,” where she ridicules the likes of Christine O’Donnell, Joe Miller, Carl Paladino, Michele Bachmann, and, of course her favorite target, Sarah Palin. Really, what would be a Maureen Dowd column without a cheap shot aimed at Sarah Palin?
Maureen Dowd never talks seriously about public policy issues or recommends any interesting or creative approaches to solving problems. I know she’s a liberal columnist but unemployment is at 10.1%, the national debt is $13 trillion, and…
Krauthammer on Afghanistan: “Why Is He Sending Them?”
Charles Krauthammer has a very important piece in National Review on our involvement in Afghanistan and the shortcomings of Barack Obama as a wartime president. Krauthammer writes:
What kind of commander in chief sends tens of thousands of troops to war while announcing in advance a fixed date for beginning their withdrawal? One who doesn’t have his heart in it. One who doesn’t really want to win but is making some kind of political gesture. One who thinks he has to be seen as trying but is preparing the ground — meaning, the political cover — for failure.
We need to either go “all in” in Afghanistan or withdraw the majority of our land forces and conduct more limited operations relying primarily on special operations forces…
What is a Conservative Foreign Policy?
Since the Democratic Party’s decisive electoral victories in 2006 and 2008, the Tea Party movement has helped to re-energize conservatism. The movement has focused largely on domestic politics, promoting limited government, fiscal responsibility, and individual liberty. The reality is, however, that when it comes to foreign policy the conservative movement is being pulled in multiple, and often mutually exclusive, directions. Some believe that democracy promotion should be the cornerstone of American foreign policy while others do not. Quite simply, the conservative movement does not have a coherent foreign policy platform. Going forward, it will be important for conservatives to articulate a clear foreign policy platform. What is at stake is not the success of the conservative movement or a political party…
Blockade Running is a Dangerous Business
Blockade running is dangerous and can carry with it significant consequences, including death. Ask Rhett Butler or Han Solo, they know. I’ve been reading a lot about the blockade running incident which occurred on Monday. Of course, many of the reports are devoid of any real analysis–or facts, for that matter–and reflexively blame Israel. Leave it to Charles Krauthammer to make sense of it all:
But as Leslie Gelb, former president of the Council on Foreign Relations, writes, the [Israeli] blockade is not just perfectly rational, it is perfectly legal. Gaza under Hamas is a self-declared enemy of Israel — a declaration backed up by more than 4,000 rockets fired at Israeli civilian territory. Yet…
Conservative Renaissance Man: An Interview with Charles Krauthammer
Charles Krauthammer is a modern-day renaissance man who has worn many hats and enjoyed tremendous success first as a psychiatrist, then journalist, international relations theorist, and now a commentator. With the passing of William F. Buckley and Samuel Huntington last year, Krauthammer is arguably the finest conservative thinker around (Newt Gingrich certainly deserves honorable mention). Cable news is filled with hollow talking heads who do little more than regurgitate liberal and conservative talking points–both sides are guilty of this. You know, they’re the ones on TV with labels like “Democratic Strategist.” Hosts, like Keith Olbermann, are the worst. So insecure is Keith Olbermann in his ability to debate that he never has guests with opposing views on his program. Krauthammer’s ability to provide valuable…
