Trick or Treat: Sale of Halloween Masks Has Predicted Presidential Election Winner Since 1980

Did you know that the sale of Halloween masks has accurately predicted the outcome of presidential elections since the election of 1980? In that year, Reagan masks outsold Carter ones by 20%; in 1984, Reagan masks outsold Mondale masks by 36%; in 1988, Bush outsold Dukakis by 24%; in 1992, Clinton outsold Bush by 2%; in 1996, Clinton outsold Dole by 16%; in 2000, Bush outsold Gore by 14%; in 2004, Bush outsold Kerry by 6%; and in 2008, Obama outsold McCain by 10%.

Of course, this is pretty fitting since politics in the U.S. can be quite a freak show–where else would you see a candidate defending herself against allegations of witchcraft?

Freedom of Choice (But Only if You Choose Abortion) Act

Despite a new study showing that abortion rates have steadily decreased since the ruling of Roe v. Wade, politicians on the left continue to champion abortionists’ cause on Capitol Hill. A new bill, the “Freedom of Choice Act” would not only legalize partial-birth abortions and mandate health-care providers perform abortions on demand even if they are morally opposed to the procedure, but would also overturn all current pro-life legislation. Not only is this a disgusting use of taxpayer money, it is not supported by the majority of US citizens. 72% of Americans believe partial-birth abortions should be illegal. 54% believe abortions…

I was recently provided with a link to this post from the female bloggers of Slate Magazine.  Generally, I try not to respond to these types of attacks as my arguments aren’t likely to change any minds.  However, I found this post to be incredibly offensive and as it seems to summarize the worst bits of the left’s attacks on Gov. Palin, so just this once, I’ll bite.

First, let’s look at this piece as a whole.  A quick search provides us with this guide from Roane State Community College on how to write an effective argument.  The most relevant suggestion (and the one most clearly ignored by Rosa Brooks in her blog post) is this:

Pro-Abortion Lobby Begins its Attacks

Susan B. Anthony List’s Political Director (and a former collegue of mine), Joy Yearout, easily won her debate yesterday on Fox News with Pro-Abortion activist Liz Chadderdon of the Chadderdon Group. Although Gov Palin is most certainly an advocate for Pro-Life Americans, even Chadderdon initially hesitates to describe her as NARAL does, “extreme and rigid.” The truth is that Gov Palin supports the right to choose in cases where the health of the mother is at risk. Gov Palin is the perfect choice to energize Pro-Life…
